About the Course

The objective of the course is to impart knowledge to the participants on the fundamental and practical aspects of corrosion. The course will begin with emphasis on the importance of studying Corrosion of materials. Fundamentals of corrosion will be addressed from the angle of thermodynamics and kinetics of electrochemical phenomena. Different forms of corrosion related to materials and mixed potential theory will be discussed. Finally, electrochemical ways of protection of metals and alloys will be explained. Moreover, it will also address the practical aspects of corrosion and how to analyze the corrosion test data and subsequent choice of protection method. The course comprising of lectures and lab session shall give the participants of learning, teaching and doing research and development the IIT Kanpur way and hopefully aid them in establishing similar procedure at their home institutes.

The course will cover the following topics:

  1. Basic understanding of corrosion and its electrochemical nature
  2. To respond to following question: Is electrochemistry enough for understanding corrosion?
  3. Different forms of Environmental degradation
  4. Thermodynamic and kinetic nature of corrosion
  5. Polarization and mixed potential theory
  6. Different corrosion measurement techniques and analysis of obtained corrosion test data
  7. Protection of metals and alloys from corrosion and how to choose protection routes?
  8. Laboratory experiments on polarization test, immersion test, fog test
